There is a barbecue place about an hour from our house that we’ll drive to when we get the urge for ribs or pulled pork. It’s takeout-only, so the entire drive home is an exercise in torture as we smell the aromas of all the barbecue saucy goodness coming from the bag in the backseat, and it’s all we can do not to pull over and dig in right on the side of the road.
So we’re clearly in need of an easy, at-home recipe for pulled pork. I came up with an extremely simple and inexpensive pulled pork recipe that practically cooks itself … well, OK, it’s made in the Crock Pot, so it really does cook itself.
To make pulled pork, you’ll need:
- 3-4 lb pork roast (shoulder or butt roast)
- 1 onion, sliced
- About 2 cups water
- 16 oz BBQ sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Arrange half of sliced onions on the bottom of the slow cooker. Place roast on top of onions and season roast with salt and pepper. Cover with the remaining sliced onions, then fill the cooker about two thirds of the way with water (about 2 or 3 cups).
Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until cooked through.
After it finishes cooking, remove the roast to a plate, and toss bones, onions and any fat drippings. Let meat cool until can be handled comfortably, then use two forks to shred, or pull, the roast apart.
Return the pork to the slow cooker and mix in BBQ sauce. Cover and heat on high for about an hour, or until heated through.
Now, how about a sandwich? This is my take on a Pittsburgh-style pulled pork sandwich.
To make pulled pork sandwiches, you’ll need:
- Pulled pork
- Barbecue sauce
- Italian bread
- Cole slaw
- Homemade fries (the authentic Pittsburgh sandwiches use deep fried fries; mine are a bit healthier!)
Pile the pork on one slice of Italian bread, then top with barbecue sauce, cole slaw, fries and another slice of bread.
Or you could omit the bbq sauce and serve with cranberry chutney.
Enjoy!

It really is a meal in itself. I hope you can find a pork roast to make pulled pork at home!

Hope your version was just as delicious!
Hi Kelly, Thanks for your comment! There’s nothing like a Primanti’s sandwich, but these are pretty close!
this is amazing, I need to try and make stuff like this, I know my hubs would appreciate it.
Looks awesome! Why didn’t anyone tell me about Pittsburgh-style pulled pork when I was there last year? I would definitely have tried it!
