Oven Baked Calzone

Oven Baked Calzone

Calzones are one of my husband’s favorite Italian specialties; however I’m hardly Italian (although I do make a mean lasagna). But what’s to a calzone? Dough, sauce, cheese and fillings, right? How hard could it be?

I donned my apron and quickly got to work. I used one of my tried-and-true dough recipes (this one from Cooking Light), although in a time crunch you could use refrigerated store-bought dough, and gathered the rest of my ingredients:

3/4 cup marinara sauce
3/4 cup Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled
1/4 cup sliced onions
1/4 cup sliced green peppers
2 tbsp yellow pepper rings, if desired
2 cups grated mozzarella cheese
1 egg white
Cornmeal for dusting
Rosemary for top, if desired
Olive oil or cooking spray

Preheat oven to 400° F

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and sprinkle cornmeal on top. Roll the dough onto the parchment paper, into about a 12-inch circle. Leaving a border of about one inch around all sides, spread sauce on half of the dough. Sprinkle sausage, onions and peppers on top of the sauce, then top with cheese. Using a brush, lightly coat the edges of the dough with an egg glaze. Fold the dry side of dough on top of the side with the toppings and cheese and press down on the edges with your finger or a fork to seal. Lightly cut into the top of the dough (about halfway through) with a sharp knife to prevent the dough from bubbling up. Brush off any excess cornmeal and spray with cooking spray or olive oil. Sprinkle top with chopped rosemary, if desired.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crust is golden.

They look great. Calzone has always been one of my favourites. The only thing that I would say is if you are ordering in a restaurant you really don’t need a starter as they are just so big! Nice photos

Leonor, Yes he was very pleased!

Coffeeboone, black olives would be delicious in this! I’ve also thought about making some sort of breakfast calzone with eggs, ham and onions.

Niall, thanks for your comment. These do come out quite large - perfect to share!
